Recent Developments: The Assassination of Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah
On September 27, Hassan Nasrallah, the long-time leader of Lebanon’s Shia militant group Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike. Nasrallah, who had led Hezbollah for over three decades since 1992, was a central figure in the Iran-backed “Axis of Resistance,” a coalition that includes groups like Hamas in Palestine and the Houthi movement in Yemen. Unlike Hamas and the Houthi, Hezbollah has held significant political power within Lebanon. This amplifies the impact of Nasrallah’s death domestically and regionally.
Before Nasrallah’s leadership, Hezbollah was a fledgling, disorganized militant group with crude and limited military tactics. Over the past 32 years, Nasrallah has led the organization out of its 41-year history, and Hezbollah evolved into a formidable military and political organization. With significant support from Iran, Hezbollah became a key player in Lebanese politics, with its members in parliament and even cabinet positions. Hezbollah’s military capabilities have developed independently over time under Nasrallah’s leadership, which effectively made him one of the strongest leaders capable of confronting Israel alongside Iran’s Supreme Leader.
