    1. Introduction

The AUKUS, the trilateral security partnership between Australia, the UK, and the U.S. which was announced on September 16, 2021, focuses on enabling Australia to acquire capabilities to build its own conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) and to eventually possess and operate its own fleet of SSNs through the transfer of SSN technology from the U.S. and the UK, thereby significantly bolstering its military deterrence capabilities against China.
