With China’s growing presence in the Indo-Pacific strategic space and its
increasingly assertive behavior in the South China Sea, the U.S., Japan, Australia, and India, have been deepening their economic and security cooperation based on shared values and visions for the Indo-Pacific region. Faced with the return of great power politics in Southeast Asia, ASEAN countries have endeavored to navigate through current and
future challenges. Meanwhile, South Korea set a new milestone in ASEAN-ROK relations by hosting a special summit in November 2019 to
commemorate the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-ROK diplomatic relations. The Korean government reaffirmed its support for “ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP)” there
following the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Bangkok.
