Guided by the Monroe Doctrine, the United States has created an exclusive sphere of influence in the Western Hemisphere, asserting unilateral influence over Latin American and Caribbean countries. However, with the waning importance of Latin America in U.S. foreign policy over the last two decades, China has
been filling a “strategic vacuum” in the region left by
the U.S. based on its increasing capital strength. As a consequence, the U.S. can no loner enjoy unrivaled status and prestige in the region.
The clash between the U.S. and China in Latin America and the Caribbean will likely go beyond the economic sphere, and develop into their
race toward predominant control over the Western Hemisphere. For this reason, shifting regional dynamics in Latin America and the Caribbean should be observed in the strategic framework of the U.S.-China rivalry. Moreover, it is advised to collect unbiased information on the changing regional order by regularizing and expanding human-to-human and academic exchanges with regional think tanks.
