1. Introduction
In July 2018, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy
Ahmed visited the country’s long-time foe
Eritrea and held a summit with Eritrea's
President Isaias Afwerki. President Afwerki
visited Ethiopia one week later. The two sides that
waged a bloody war against each other in 1998 went
further to sign a peace agreement (Agreement on
Peace, Friendship and Comprehensive Cooperation
between Eritrea and Ethiopia) in 2018 and
dramatically improved the long-severed ties. This
article aims to give an analysis of efforts made by
Ethiopia and Eritrea to normalize relations, provide
an outlook for the peace building process and
propose policy considerations.
