Right-wing governments are dominating Latin America and the “Pink-Tide”1) is ebbing in the region with the election of a string of conservative leaders as
presidents. The split in the “Pink-Tide” appears to be slowing down with the election of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador as Mexico’s president, but as the ABC2) has made a sharp turn to the right, the rise of a left-leaning government in Mexico can do little to change the political landscape of the region showing a sharp rightward swing. Specifically, in October 2018, Brazil elected a far-right President
Jair Bolsonaro who praises military dictatorship and is accused of attacking women, black people and gay people.
The surge of right-wing populism in Latin America undermines core values like tolerance, diversity and human rights, while spreading hatred, intolerance and rage among people. As Koreans living in or traveling to the region could become the target of crimes committed in rage, the government should provide guidelines to ensure the safety of the Koreans in Latin American countries and beef up efforts to protect them.
