I. Introduction
Atrade dispute between the world’s largest
economy, the United States and China,
triggered by the Trump administration’s
bid to correct its trade imbalance with
China escalated into a full-fledged trade war in
2018. It is noteworthy that their strategic rivalry is
dominating the current picture and the US, based
on strategic calculations, has adhered to its
unyielding stance on China. The US has attributed
the cause of its trade war with China to its state
capitalism where the state steers the economy as
the dominant economic player, arguing that the
trade spat is not just about trade deficits, but also
about the China’s practice of state’s deep
engagement in its economy. Yet, since taking office,
Chinese President Xi Jinping has formed a
centralized government. Hence, it would not be
easy for China to make concessions to the US’ call
for distancing itself from the current economic
scheme. Then, how would Beijing respond to
Washington’s pressures?
