I. Introduction
The dialogue between the ROK and
North Korea in the wake of the Winter
Olympics in Pyeongchang will begin
with military talks, which will be
followed by high-level talks. The Korean
government should make efforts to translate the
inter-Korean dialogue into opportunities to hold
the US-North Korea dialogue so as to ease tensions
on the Korean peninsula. If inter-Korean summit
and US-North Korea summit can be held in the next
one to two years, this will provide a decisive
breakthrough in the resolution of the North Korean
nuclear crisis and in relieving the strain on
inter-Korean relations. For the inter-Korean
dialogue to continue, Seoul should come up with the
ways to respond to Pyongyang’s demands for eased
UN sanctions and a halt to the joint South
Korea-U.S. military drills.
Korea and the United States have
cooperated in areas like security, military, politics
and economy for the past 70 years. Against the
current backdrop of the North Korean nuclear
crisis, Seoul and Washington should closely
cooperate to create a virtuous circle between the
inter-Korean relations and Korea-US relations.
