Assessment of President Trump’s First Year in Office and Implications

    I. Introduction
    President Donald Trump’s “Buy American,
Hire American" slogan lies at the core of
his 'America First' policy. In the backdrop
of waning American hegemony and China rising as
its rival after the 2008 financial crisis, the U.S.
needs to take a realistic approach to focus on
domestic matters, such as job creation and
economic growth, to ease the pain and anxiety
among American people, rather than striving to
maintain its status as the world’s policeman. Trump
administration aims to rebuild the United States by
preventing it from using too much of its national
power in foreign affairs through ‘retrenchment’ and
‘restraint’, and concentrate more on domestic
matters. To preserve the core diplomatic/security
interests of the country, the Trump administration
is pushing its allies to share the burden and take on
    extended roles.
    Trump's America First arguments
appealed to American voters last year and
contributed to his electoral victory. Continuous
economic downturn and increasing trade and fiscal
deficit led them to support Trump's campaign
pledges. According to ANES 2016 Time Series
Study, 68% of Americans agreed that “the U.S.
should concentrate on resolving domestic issues
and let other countries resolve their issues on their
    own.”
This piece aims to provide the assessments
of the Trump administration's domestic and foreign
policies during the first year in office and their
implications for its future policy directions.
