With the Paris Agreement entering into force, the newly-elected Moon Jae-in
administration has set “Building an efficient implementation system under the new climate regime” as its main agenda and decided to take a more aggressive climate action. The administration has made it clear that it will map out and finalize ‘National Vision and Objectives for Sustainable Development and Implementation Strategies’ - to introduce new measures like increasing the share of renewable electricity generation by 2030 to 20%, moving away from coal-fired power plants by shutting down aging plants, and imposing stricter emission
standards and actively formulate policies to tackle climate change. On the international stage, the new government strives to play more proactive role in climate diplomacy through efforts like stepping up domestic measures for constraining national emissions, playing a more constrictive role in the
follow-up negotiations to the Paris Agreement and devising a number of new policy mechanisms to cooperate with developing countries.
We need to take the perspective of ‘enlightened national interests’ and to engage in international climate change cooperation based on a long-term perspective - that contributing to the global fight against climate change will help Korea broaden its international standing and national prestige in the longer term.
