Pyongyang’s calculus is simple. And that’s evident looking at a column titled “The Unprecedented Crisis throughout the Entire History of Korea” which appeared on the July 11 edition of Rodong Sinmun. It says, “Now Washington’s out of military options against us. Many at home and abroad have predicted that if we are equipped with nuclear and missile capabilities advanced enough to hit US territories,
the US nuclear umbrella will be torn apart, resulting in shaking the US-ROK alliance. And that’s exactly the situation Washington is
confronted with.” The evolution of Pyongyang’s nuclear deterrence doctrine, with IRBM and ICBM capabilities at its core, aims to undermine the US nuclear umbrella. It also envisions to prevent wartime reinforcement of US forces on the Korean peninsula, ultimately the US intervention during wartime.
