Assessment and Outlook of the 2017 Bonn Climate Change Conference
    June 12, 2017
    CHOE, Wongi
Associate Professor, Dept. of International Economy and Trade Studies
At the twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties(COP22) held in Marrakech last year, Morocco, parties agreed to conclude follow-up negotiations on matters related to the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement by 2018, the year COP24 is scheduled in Poland. And the first negotiation session took place from May 8 to 18 2017, in Bonn, Germany. The 2017 Bonn Climate Change
Conference consisted of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement(APA), the third part of the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1-3), Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 46), and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 46).
At the climate negotiation, the ROK belongs to the Environmental Integrity Group(EIG). EIG is unique in the climate negotiation in that its membership includes both developed and developing countries, thereby being in a position that would allow EIG to develop
proposals and submissions that could accommodate both developed and developing country Parties’ positions. In this sense, the ROK needs to further strengthen its efforts in the
negotiation such that the EIG could play a bridging role in the negotiations even when the EIG members' stances on major agendas diverge to a greater degree than ever before. EIG is also encouraged to explore ways to build a strategic partnership with non-EIG Parties to advance the negotiation frontier by establishing issue-based ad hoc partnerships with non EIG Parties.
