1. Introduction
In recent years, multiple challenges posed
at home and abroad have beset the Korean
Peninsula, drastically exacerbating the
security environment surrounding the
Peninsula. Among them are the ceaseless progress
of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile
capabilities, looming war clouds on and
surrounding the Peninsula, intensifying great
power struggle in Northeast Asia, etc. As South
Koreans just elected new President Moon Jae-in, it
is vital for the new administration to thoroughly
re-examine the Republic of Korea's national
security strategy to deftly craft the trajectory of its
national security policy for the years to come. This
article is designed to provide the Moon
administration with new ideas for its national
security policy by analysing and reviewing the key
concepts and structure of national security strategy.
Furthermore, the article seeks to help
shape criteria needed to make judgements in
selecting and implementing specific policy agendas
in the coming years, by articulating the goals and
operational principles of the ROK's national
security strategy.
