With Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election held on November 8, Europe’s security backed by the North Atlantic alliance has become the most imminent issue. During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump remarked that NATO is “obsolete,” and he will not protect those NATO member states not paying their fair share of defence expenditures. NATO’s European allies voiced their concerns that Trump’s comment is not in line with Article Ⅴ of the North Atlantic Treaty on collective defence. Since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, tension between NATO and Russia has escalated, resulting in their relations being described as a new-Cold War. Under such circumstances, the U.S. President-elect with pro-Russia sentiments questions the U.S. commitment to NATO, and this is regarded to raise uncertainty in Europe’s security that has been dependent on the U.S.
