US President-elect Donald Trump’s ‘neo-isolationist’ foreign policy is geared toward pursuing U.S. interests and is largely based on an entrepreneurial mindset, which prioritizes economic interests. Trump has all along framed himself as an advocate of American Firstism as opposed to an isolationist; he criticized Washington for having provided “free” security to its allies and the international community and said that the United States is not the world’s policeman and has no gains from acting as one. He proposed to impose high tariffs on Chinese exports to the United States as a way of stopping China’s militarization of the disputed South China Sea.
The new administration will likely demand an increased share of defense costs from U.S. allies, but apart from this, there are more practical concerns about the United States abandoning its allies, including South Korea. President-elect Trump has in fact expressed his willingness to renegotiate alliance pacts and even said that the United States will allow South Korea to develop its own nuclear weapons, instead of having the country rely on the U.S. nuclear umbrella to protect itself from North Korean threats. However, Trump probably made these remarks for negotiation purposes to increase U.S. allies’ defense spending, and the ROK-U.S. alliance will continue to remain firm after all.
