At the very beginning of this year, the Saudi Arabian government carried out an execution of 47 anti-government terrorists. While the unusually large scale of the execution caught people’s attention, the fact
that four Shia leaders were among those executed immediately triggered protest from Shia-majority countries, including Iran. In particular, the death of Sheikh Nimr Bakr al-Nimr aroused the anger of all Shia Muslims in the world, which led to outright protest in front of the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Teheran, and in India, Pakistan, and Iraq.
    1. Background of Saudi Arabia’s Concern
    2. The Expected Impact Within and Outside the Region
    3. Implications and Prospects
