    Presidential Election

    On January 16, 2016, Taiwan
    will elect its 14th president
    and members of the 9th
    The Ma administration focused on
expanding and securing Taiwan’s status as a
sovereign state in response to shrinking
room for its existence in international
society and to a wide range of pressure
    from China. Given the realistic
    impossibility of Taiwan’s independence,
the new administration will carry out
    survival diplomacy. In particular, Taiwan
should be careful not to aggravate Beijing
with its policies, as China’s rapid emergence
has already reduced room for Taiwan’s
foreign policy. With the U.S. checking
China with its “rebalance to Asia” policy,
Ms Tsai stated her intention to push for
Taiwan’s joining of the U.S.-led TransPacific
    Partnership (TPP) agreement,
hinting at the new administration’s policy
aimed at reinforcing its relations with
    Washington. IFANS 2015 ©
    Legislative Yuan. The
    Democratic Progress Party
(DPP) nominated Tsai Ing-wen as its
presidential candidate as early as April
    2015, whereas the Chinese Nationalist
    Party (KMT) nominated Hung Hsiu-chu
only in July, which had to do with the
decline in the approval rating for
President Ma Ying-jeou and the KMT. In
August, Soong Chu-yu of the People
First Party (PFP) officially announced his
candidacy, but Ms Tsai’s approval rating
by far exceeded those of the other two
    candidates all along.
