  • The U.S. Mid-term Election:
    Analysis and Prospects for
    the Future U.S. Foreign Policy

    The 2010 U.S. mid-term elections
which serve as a chance of
reviewing the Obama admini-stration during the first two
years of his presidency have resulted in
    an overwhelming victory for Republicans
who by adding more than 60 seats won
the total of 239 seats in the House of
    Representatives defeating Democrats
of 187 seats. In the Senate, Republicans
took 46 seats by winning 5 more seats
in this election and this has left
    Democrats narrowly securing a 53-46
majority. For 40 straight years from
    1955 through 1994, the Democratic
Party took control of the U.S. House of
    Representatives. Democrats lost control
in 1994 during the Clinton admini-stration but regained it in the election
of 2006. This time in 2010, Republicans
took back control of the House.
    With regard to the ROK-U.S.
relations, there would be not much
    fundamental changes except that the
ROK-U.S. FTA is likely to be ratified.
Also, Republicans would not raise any
critique on the ROK-U.S. alliance as it
has been firmly maintained so far.
    Nonetheless, there remains a possibility
that Republicans can raise concerns on
    some specific matters: for example,
they will possibly request ROK to
    participate in the National Missile
Defense (NMD), to increase U.S. arms
sales to Korea, or to share expenses
with the U.S. in dealing with relocation
of the U.S. military base in Korea
