  • New International Order Debate:
    "Washington Consensus" and/or "Beijing
    Consensus"

    October 1, 2009,
    KANG Seon Jou
    Professor
Dept. of Int’l Economy & Trade Studies
    Drawing much interest at
    the moment is how
    China's rise, rendered
    more pronounced by
    the recent financial
    crisis which started on
Wall Street a year ago, will affect the
    international relations in the future.
    Specifically, issues of primary concern
are 1) a possible transition of power
from the United States to China; 2) the
    elements of the international order
which China might advocate; and 3)
possible US efforts to counter China's
    ascendance.
The "Group of Two (G-2)" can
be seen as a mechanism for managing
    US-Sino economic relations while
    unofficially overseeing the global
economy. Given the joint leadership of
the two countries, the G-2 is more likely
to boost the efficiency of existing
    multilateral cooperation mechanisms.
