  • Recent Developments
    in Global Governance Reform
    July 16, 2009

Dept. of International Economy and Trade Studies
    The ongoing international
    collaborations to overcome
    global economic crisis and
    challenges from climate
    change have important
    implications for the transformation of
global governance in the coming future.
Issues of particular importance that are
likely to have significant impacts on the
future courses of reform of global
    governance include the regularization
    and institutionalization of G20 summit
    meetings; international cooperation to
    strengthen and tighten financial
    regulation and supervision; the
    outcomes of international settlements,
particularly between the U.S. and China,
to correct the global imbalances; and
    UN-led climate change negotiations.
    Finally, depending on the
outcomes of the UN climate change
negotiations now under way that are
scheduled to come to a conclusion in
    Copenhagen this coming December, a
    fundamental shift in the international
    regime that would govern the
greenhouse gas emission for the Post-2012 period might take place. For now,
the negotiation prospect for a success
at the Copenhagen is not so bright for
    advanced and developing nations
continue to lock horns over some key
    points of contention—for example
    setting mid-term carbon emission
    reduction targets and imposition of
    mandatory reduction for some key
    developing countries.
    However, the widely shared
    international consensus on a successful
conclusion of the negotiations and a
    strong political momentum gained in
    serious of recent international talks
    raise expectations for the Copenhagen
    climate change summit in December.
