  • World Leaders Forum
for Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Republic of Korea
    Seoul, October 29-30, 2008
Republic of Korea: 60 and Beyond
    Preface
The year 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the Republic of Korea, which was founded in a paradox
of the exuberant liberation and the subsequent tragic ideological division of the Korean nation. This
notwithstanding, Korea has firmly stood its ground over the past half a century. In doing so, she has
overcome numerous challenges such as poverty, war and idealogical division and become the 13th
largest democratic economy in the world.
Against this backdrop, World Leaders Forum, organized by the Institute of Foreign Affairs and
National Security (IFANS), was held in Seoul on 29-30 October 2008. Under the title “Republic of
Korea: 60 and Beyond,” the purposes of the forum were to reflect on the modern history of Korea
and to seek ways to enhance national potential and bring about a global Korea.
Many prominent leaders, Nobel laureates and renowned scholars from all over the world were
invited as keynote presenters and panelists. More than 450 members of government, academia,
business, bank and media participated in the forum. President LEE Myung-bak delivered the
keynote address in which he emphasized Korea’s leading role in reshaping the international
economic order. During the forum, panelists assessed the achievement of Korea for the past 60 years
and envisaged its future under the new national strategy, “Low Carbon, Green Growth,” while
analyzing global trends in the 21st century.
These proceedings contain summaries and outcome reports of the World Leaders Forum, which are
the intellectual products of the many speakers at the forum. IFANS would like to take this
opportunity once again to express its sincere appreciations to all the participants of the forum.
    LEE Soon-chun
    Chancellor
Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security
