Ⅵ. Conclusion
Against this backdrop, the unification strategy of South Korea should be set by looking
at the inter-Korean relations in a regional perspective and finding ways to reduce
tensions and enhance the cooperation between the two Koreas in the context of East
Asia instead of Korean peninsula per se. In this context, South Korea must work hard to
persuade China and Japan to put their efforts on constructing a system of regional
cooperation for reasons of security and prosperity in Asia.
Korea's central role in regional cooperation, combined with close cooperation from the
US, will not only enhance the chance for unification, but will also provide a cornerstone
for a unified Korea to play a major role in setting the new order in Asia. In this new
Asian order where regional order and global order are closely interconnected through
Korea as a linchpin, Korea will find it much easier to get its own national security in
hand. If Asian regional peace can not be kept autonomously, the US will act as a
balancer and a mediator with its air and naval power, while Korea will provide the US
with a stepping stone to get involved in the Asian balance of power system which is a
part of the global peace system.
If the system of peace in East Asia can be linked to the system of world peace through
a close relationship between the US and Korea, Korea can then undertake the task of
interlinking the peace system of Asia and that of Europe. Unified Korea, with a
combined population of about 80 million, a GNP of 1 trillion dollars and well trained
combined forces, would be comparable to Great Britain in Europe. The realization of a
combined economy and the combined defensive forces of the South and North will
chance the status and the role of unified Korea dramatically. With her old peace-loving
tradition and newly gained national prestige based upon her economic and human
resources, unified Korea could well become one of the major powers of the AsianPacific
region as well as a "central nation of the world." able to contribute to the peace and prosperity of Asia as well as the whole world in the 21st century.
